Resilience: The Superpower You Already Have

A note on self-care, stress, and what it takes to stay standing.

I've been through a lot recently so this note is a bit closer to home. I hope it resonates.

I want to talk about resilience—the ultimate midlife flex.

It’s that quiet force that holds you up when the world tries to knock you down. You know it’s important—you’ve probably encouraged your kids to build it, admired it in others, maybe even reflected on it during hard seasons of your own. But when life really hits (and oh, does it), you stop talking about resilience and start living it.

And lately? I’ve been living it.

My brother’s brutal battle with ALS. My mother’s decline and recent passing. Months—years, really—of caregiving, grieving, loving, and losing, and doing it all with love and exhaustion tangled together.

Some days, I’m amazed I’m still upright. But here’s the truth: I’m not standing because I’m superhuman. I’m standing because I take ridiculously good care of myself. Unapologetically. Without guilt. Not just when it’s convenient or when I’ve “earned it.”

Because if I don’t show up for me first, I can’t show up for anyone else.

We’re told self-care is indulgent. But let me tell you something: it’s medicine. It’s strength-building. It’s a radical act of self-love I choose for myself every single day. It’s how I’ve kept my heart soft when the world feels hard.

And it’s not just saunas and meditation apps (though yes, please, to both). It’s nourishment. Movement. Rest. Breath. A beautiful plate of real food that reminds me I’m alive and worthy of feeling good. It’s knowing when to cry and when to call someone who gets it.

Gratitude helps too. Being that close to illness and mortality gives you a visceral appreciation for vitality. I take nothing for granted. I feel profoundly grateful to be healthy—and that gratitude fuels everything: how I work, how I love, how I move through the world.

And yes, leaning on your people is part of resilience too. No woman is an island—we’re archipelagos. Connection is health.

Resilience Isn’t Just Emotional—It’s Physical, Too.

Early in my holistic nutrition training, I learned a truth that’s stayed with me:

Your body is a master of balance. Always working to maintain homeostasis—that's just a fancy word for equilibrium. The body isn't a set of disconnected parts, but a brilliant, integrated system. When something’s off, it compensates. A little energy here, some minerals pulled from bones there. Quiet miracles.

But here’s the catch: if too many areas need support and the reserves run low, the whole system starts to fray. Slowly. Quietly. Until one day your body whispers, “I’ve done all I can.”

That’s when symptoms creep in—fatigue, headaches, digestive issues, inflammation that won’t back down. Maybe even bigger things.

That’s not just aging. That’s depletion.

So what do we do? We build resilience before the storm hits—even (especially) when we feel strong.

Your Resilience Toolkit: Start where you are. Master the basics.

Here’s your simple, doable, powerful starter kit:

  • Move that beautiful body.
Muscle and balance training now = fewer falls and more freedom later. Strength is sexy. So is stability.

  • Break up with blood sugar spikes.
Stable blood sugar means less inflammation, steadier moods, and fewer “hangry” meltdowns (we’ve all been there).

  • Fiber is your friend.
It binds toxins and helps sweep them out the back door (yes, that one). Think leafy greens, chia, flax, and cruciferous vegetables.

  • Prioritize sleep.
Rest is when your body heals. It’s your built-in overnight repair system.

  • Hydrate.
Your cells, your liver, your skin - everything functions better when you’re well hydrated.

  • Breathe—deeply, often, on purpose.
Every exhale supports your nervous system, detox, and your body’s ability to reset.

  • Eat real food.
Organic when you can. Skip the highly processed options. Cook simply.

  • Stay connected.
Isolation chips away at health. Let yourself be seen. Let yourself receive.

I believe resilience is built one salad, one squat, one sleep, one soulful conversation at a time.

That’s exactly what I help my clients do—rebuild their foundations so they can weather storms without losing themselves in the wreckage.

So if you’re feeling cracked, depleted, or just tired of running on fumes, you can learn more about working together here.

Because resilience isn’t about being unshakable.
It’s about knowing you can shake—and still stay whole
